Vyasa Theertha (1447–1539)

The Yantrodharaka Hanuman Temple stands in Hampi, Bellary, Karnataka, the historic capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple is near Chakratheertha, a sacred spot where Lord Vishnu received his divine Chakra—named so due to the Tungabhadra River flowing nearby.

Vyasa Raja, the revered Raja Guru of Vijayanagara, played a crucial role in guiding Emperor Krishna Deva Raya to greatness. He also served as the Chancellor of the renowned Vijayanagara University, an esteemed center of learning that once welcomed 10,000 students from across the region. Among his most distinguished disciples was the celebrated saint-composers, Purandara Dasa and Kanaka Daasa

On the banks of the Tunga, Vyasa Theertha often meditated, sketching the image of Lord Hanuman using charcoal on a rock. One day, a mysterious event unfolded—a monkey sat upon the rock, aligning itself with his charcoal drawing. As soon as Vyasa Raja completed his pooja, the monkey vanished into the rock. This phenomenon repeated twelve times over twelve days.

Seeking divine intervention, Vyasa Raja fervently prayed to Prana Devaru (the Wind God, Pavan), requesting his presence to remain on the rock and bless humanity. In response to his devotion, Vyasa Raja composed the Yantrodharaka Hanuman Stotra and encircled the divine image with a Yantra—the Shatkona Yantra (Hexagon), also known as the Vayu Yantra. From that moment, the sacred image remained.

Lord Hanuman, depicted in deep meditation, is surrounded by intricately carved twelve monkeys, each holding the tail of the one in front, facing backward—symbolizing the twelve days of prayers Vyasa Raja undertook before receiving divine blessings.

Hanuman's crown is formed by his own tail, and sacred seed syllables are inscribed upon the rock around the statue.

This very site holds profound historical significance—it is believed to be the place where Lord Ram and Hanuman first met, while the nearby region is recognized as the legendary Kishkindha Nagari.

He installed and constructed 732 Hanuman temples all across the country.

Another famous story is of son of Purandara daasa : Madhwapathi Dasa

One well-known tale revolves around Madhwapathi Dasa the son of Purandara Dasa, who was devoted to Lord Hanuman and worshipped him daily. When Dasaru had to travel to another city, he entrusted his son with the sacred duty of offering Naivedhya (food offering) to Hanuman.

However, despite his sincere devotion, the food remained untouched. Thinking he had done something wrong, the child began to cry, fearing his mother’s scolding. Moved by his innocence, Lord Hanuman appeared and accepted the Naivedhya. This divine occurrence continued for several days.

Upon his return, Purandara Dasa was astonished to hear of the miracle and wished to witness it himself. However, when he observed the offering, Hanuman did not appear. The young boy, overwhelmed with emotion, pleaded, “I know you are real, but if you do not come now, everyone will think I am a liar!”

In response to his earnest plea, Hanuman manifested before everyone and accepted the Naivedhya once again, proving the depth of the boy’s faith.
